What’s a Compact Database in MS Access?
Compact database is a large database condensed in size to create free space for more data. It’s a useful feature of MS Access which allows for compacting by using unconsumed spaces in a database. Database keeps on increasing in size as you add more and more data to it and takes more processing time to open. A compact database runs faster and occupies less space. Even if a record is reduced or deleted in a database, the space allocated to it is not made available for other data to occupy. MS Access 2000 can automate compacting through a simple step by step process:
Go to Tools menu--> Click on Options--> then click on General tab--> select Compact on Close--> Click OK
Now, whenever you close this database, it will compact and repair itself automatically. However, while compacting the database should be open and not in use by any other user. Compacting will keep your database efficient and perform at full capacity. To compact Access 2000, 2002 and 2003 database manually, follow following instructions:
Open your database; choose Tools--> click on Database Utilities--> then, click on Compact and Repair Database
